With a shout, I shot up in bed, my heart pounding and my skin covered in sweat. I flailed for a moment, wrapped up in my sheets like an enchilada. When I finally managed to free myself, I paced around in my room, too freaked out to just turn over and go back to sleep. I rubbed my arms, trying to dispel the gooseflesh that had risen. Darkness filled my room, a darkness that was usually comforting but only filled me with uncertainty and uneasiness.
I jumped with a little shriek when Pipsqueak, affectionately known as Pippy, brushed his face against my leg. I knelt and scooped him up into my arms, clutching him fearfully. Holding him close, I returned to bed but didn’t lie back down, instead sitting with my back pressed against the wall. Pippy pressed his nose into my hand, seemingly worried. I held the tom close to my chest, clinging to him for some sense of safety. He was skittish but for good reason – he’d been attacked when he was a kitten. When I’d found him, he was too dehydrated to even meow, the last third of his tail had been nearly torn off, hanging only by a thread of skin, and his lip had been pulled down from its natural place. For the longest time, he had a strangled, painful sound meow. I hadn’t truly known it at that time but I knew it now – Death had been one baby step away from him. Had I not found him right then, he would have died no question about it.
Holding him close I got back out of bed and went downstairs to the kitchen. I set the tom on the counter and grabbed one of the larger mugs from the cupboard. Setting it down, I went to the pantry and reached for a box, drawing out two hot chocolate packets. I shook them so the contents were thrown to the bottom of the bag and emptied the powder into the cup. I reached above the stove and pulled down a measuring cup, filling it with two cups of milk from the fridge. I put the measuring cup into the microwave and set it for a minute.
Turning, I leaned back against the counter. I didn’t really think I’d be getting back to sleep soon at all. I had to wait for a minute or two before I could finally sit down cross-legged on the floor, sipping silently from my cup. I thought about texting Sebastian, he would talk to me if I needed him to, but it was nearly three o’clock in the morning and I didn’t want to wake him up. Sighing, I took the last sip of my drink and stood.
I turned towards the sink and the mug slid from my hand, hitting the floor with a thud before shattering into hundreds of little glass shards. Pippy hissed as the hooded figure faced me and light shone in on a bit of his face from the darkness of the hood, revealing a disconcerting grin on its too-pale face. Then, more of the light seeped under the hood and I saw its eyes, glowing like a cat’s in pale light, shining with a sickly acid green glow. It stepped towards me and, as if protecting me, Pippy launched at the figure, raking his sharp claws inside its hood. With a hiss of pain, the figure hit Pippy with the back of its hand, flinging the tom across the room, and escaped through the open door behind him, dashing out into the freezing cold night.
Terrified, I ran over to Pippy and scooped him off the ground, receiving a pained meow in reply, and escaped the house, stopping only to grab the keys to my car on the way. Wearing only a pair of shorts and a thin tank top, I carried Pippy out to my Honda Civic and jumped inside, yanking the door closed behind me. I jammed the key into the ignition, turned the engine over, shoved the car into gear, and tore away from the house, near on the verge of tears. I sped down the highway, somehow lucking out by not getting pulled over. I was too freaked out to turn the heater on in my car and, considering the hour, my distinct lack of proper clothing and the fact that I lived in the mountains of Colorado, the temperature was well below freezing.
I made it to my destination in record time. Grabbing Pippy, I hopped out of the car, bumped the door closed with my hip, and hurried up to the door, my teeth chattering and my feet stinging from the cold. I stepped up to the door and rapped loudly against it, bouncing on my feet and looking over my shoulder every few seconds. I jumped when the door suddenly opened and Sebastian appeared in the doorway, his hulking shape filling the doorway. He looked down at me with dark, bleary eyes, clearly confused. I stepped into him immediately, pressing myself against his chest.
“Erin, what in the hell are you doing here? And where are your clothes?” He demanded, yanking me inside and shutting the door behind him. I stood there, snow caked on my feet, as he grabbed a blanket from the couch and wrapped it around my shoulders. Pippy squirmed slightly in my arms but didn’t try too hard to get away and Sebastian led me over to the couch, helping me sit down. “Erin, what the hell happened?” He demanded again.
“Someone w-was in m-my house, Sebastian.” I stammered, my teeth chattering incessantly, tears sliding shamelessly down my high-cheekboned face. My blue-grey eyes were wide with fear and I finally let Pippy go so that I could pull my knees up to my chest. The tom settled on the couch beside me, staying close. “Sebastian, they weren’t… Something’s wrong with me. I saw something that shouldn’t...” I whispered, glancing over at him.
“Why do you say that?” He asked gently.
“I… I saw… Its eyes were glowing, Sebastian. That’s not possible.” I told him.
“We can talk about it tomorrow, alright? Come on, you can sleep in my bed tonight.” He offered. I nodded, shakily and got up to follow him. He led me into his room, a place that was nearly as familiar to me as my own bedroom, and immediately curled up under the covers of his twin-sized bed. Sebastian sat by my side and pulled the blanket up to my neck. “I’ll let your father know you’re staying the night here, ok? But, after this, you better not ever do something that stupid again. Going outside in your pajamas without shoes or a jacket? We’ll be lucky if you don’t get pneumonia.” He chided, looking at me through his dark lashes. “Anyway, get some rest, ok? You could use it.” Sebastian said and got up as Pippy leapt up and curled into a little ball between my knees.
I was asleep before Sebastian even left the bedroom.

“Come on, Erin, wake up already.” Someone said, drawing me out of my sleep. “Jeez, you’re acting more out of it since that time you went on a Cry binge and stayed up for two days straight.” It was Sebastian, gently prodding my shoulder. I opened my eyes and blinked several times, trying to orient myself. Sebastian was bent over me, one hand on the bed and the other on my shoulder. Weirdly weak, I sat up and rubbed my eyes. When I looked back to Sebastian, I found that my eyes were blurry. “Huh…” I breathed.
“What is it?” He asked a bit worriedly.
I chuckled and looked up at him sheepishly. “Apparently I never put my contacts back in last night.”
“You…drove here…in the middle of the night…without contacts in?” Sebastian asked, dumfounded.
“Hey! It’s not like I didn’t have other, far more important things on my mind!” I said, shrugging my shoulders.
Sebastian moaned and stood up straight. “You are going to get yourself killed one of these days. Seriously, girl, you need to pay more attention to things.” He said, crossing his arms over his chest.
“Have some faith in me, jeez. At least I had the wherewithal to not stay in the house.” I said, swinging my legs out of bed.
“Come on. I made some breakfast. Kita’s already awake. Go get some clothes from her. You can’t walk around like that.” He said and turned to leave the room. “Hurry up, there’s grits on the stove.”
“Is there bacon and cheese?” I asked excitedly.
“Of course,” He replied with a soft chuckle. “Now go on and get dressed.”
I stood up quickly but almost immediately sat back down, dizzy from the sudden movement. My head swam for a minute before my vision cleared up and I was able to get back to my feet. I left Sebastian’s room and moved down the hall before turning into Kita’s bedroom. It always surprised other people how her room was set up. She had a beautiful canopy bed draped with a thick blue comforter and white pillows. The walls of her room were a soft blue while her long dresser was painted off-white. The white carpet was plush and felt as if you were walking on the softest grass.
Kita was in the back of her room, petting both Pippy and her cat, Mezza, a beautiful Siamese tom. Kita turned at hearing me enter – I walked pretty heavy-footed – and smiled. “It’s good to hear you’re finally awake. Sebastian told me about what happened. You didn’t get hurt, did you?” She asked as the smile on her face vanished, replaced with concern.
“Nah, I’m just fine. I promise.” I smiled and moved over to pet Pippy. “How’d you know he was here too?”
“I know his meow, of course. Not only that, but his fur feels a lot different than Mezza’s.” She giggled.
I nodded and stood back up. “Sebastian told me to come steal some clothes.”
“Go right ahead. You know where they’re all at.” She said, motioning towards the dresser. Even blind, Kita knew where everything was in her room.
I went over to her dresser and pulled out a pair of pants, then to her closet and grabbed a shirt. I took the clothes and went out to the bathroom before changing. I ended up wearing dark grey shirt with three-quarter sleeves and a pair of black pants that were scrunched at the knees. I balled up my pajamas and went down to the kitchen where both Kita and Sebastian were.
I smiled and accepted the plate of eggs and bacon, as well as the bowl of grits. It didn’t take long before we all finished eating and, right as I was washing my plate and bowl, the phone started ringing. Kita moved over and picked it up. “Hello?” She asked. “Oh, she’s right here.” She said and held the phone out in front of her, towards the sound of the sink so that she faced me. “Kita, it’s your daddy.” She said.
I took the phone, thanking her before putting it to my ear. “It’s me, papa.” I said, leaning back against the counter.
“Sebastian called and said someone had gotten into the house.” He explained worriedly. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah, I’m fine. Pippy and I are over here at Sebastian and Kita’s. I’m sorry I left the house unlocked.” I said softly, glancing over at Sebastian who moved me out of the way by putting his hands on my hips and scooting me out of the way of the sink so he could do the dishes.
I moved a few feet away and looked out the window, watching as snow slowly fell to add to the already knee-deep blanket that covered the yard. “I’m coming home Friday night, alright?” He had an odd job that kept him away from home for a week or two at a time, coming home on weekends. During the week, I was left to fend for myself. I rather enjoyed the privacy, to tell the truth. “Stay at Kita’s or...” Dad paused almost uncomfortably. “Stay there or have Sebastian stay at the house with you until I can get home.” He said quickly.
“Dad, I’ll be fine. I was just freaked out, that’s all. For all I know there wasn’t even anybody there. I’d just woken up from a nightmare. My brain was probably just…seriously overactive.” I told him, though I knew that what I had seen was all too real. Those glowing eyes had haunted me throughout the night. Those eyes were as real as the phone in my hand.
“I’m still coming home as soon as I can. I don’t want you in that house alone, do you understand me?” Dad said. The worry was almost painfully clear in his voice.
“Ok, ok. I’ll ask. I’ll see you when you get home, alright?” I sighed, somewhat annoyed at his persistence.
“I love you Erin.” Dad said gently.
“Love you too, dad. See you soon.” I said and hung up the phone, sighing heavily before going to sit down beside Kita.
“What’re you suppose to ask?” Sebastian asked, glancing over his shoulder at me. His sea green eyes danced with an odd knowledge that had always intrigued me.
“Dad wants me to either stay here or to have you stay at the house with me until he gets home Friday night. I don’t see why-”
“I can stay over at your place.” He said calmly, returning his attention to the dishes.
“Oh, you don’t have to Sebastian. Dad is just being paranoid, that’s all-”
“You’re not about to argue your way out of this, Erin. Your father doesn’t like you being alone in that house after someone marched right in and, quite frankly, I’m not happy about it either.” He explained without so much as glancing over to me.
“Sebastian, I really don’t-” I started, a blush creeping across my cheeks.
“Erin, stop it.” Kita said and I turned to face her. “What if they come back tonight and you don’t wake up before they find their way to your room? What if Pipsqueak isn’t there to stop him?” She asked. Her dark eyebrows were knit with concern.
I frowned. “Fine, but I’m going to get home and take a shower.” I said stubbornly, glancing down when Pippy rubbed his cheek against my leg, letting out a soft meow. I smiled and knelt to scoop him up, hugging him close to my chest. “I’m going to go home, then and head out for a walk. I want the fresh air.”
Sebastian turned towards me with somewhat annoyed green eyes. “Erin, be-”
“Dude, I’ll be fine. I’m not a little kid.” I said, glaring at him a bit. I hated being treated like I couldn’t handle myself. “Seriously, I’ll text if some creep gets too close. Don’t try acting like a knight in shining armor, ok?”
Well, here's chapter two of this little series. I do hope y'all are enjoying ^-^

Also, if you hadn't noticed, Erin is strongly based on myself. What can I say? I was bored and wanted to give it a try. So far, I rather like it.
